12 Days In Alaska
Our Time On The Land
Friday morning, the Legend Of The Seas landed in Seward, and all passenger disembarked in ordered groups. When our group left the ship, we walked down a long set of stairs and entered Royal Celebrity Bus 331, our home for the next 5 days.
Our Bus took us to the Seward Sealife Center, a wonderful place full of fish, seals, and birds. Later we headed for Alyeska, stopping on the way to see the big game center before arriving at one of the most beautiful hotels and places I've ever been.
The Alyeska Princess hotel sits at the base of one of the most beautil ski mountains I've ever seen. After unpacking we took the tram to 2,300 foot mark, and walked around viewing the surrounding mountains, glaciers and Turnagain Arm.
After dinner, I headed back up the tram to hike up the rest of the mountain. After a fifty minute climb, Randy and Sylvina Tucker and I made it to a pseudo glacier near Alyeska's Summit. The view and the experience were totally awesome.
Saturdaywe went to the airport to fly to Fairbanks. Of course, we didn't actually fly to Fairbanks that morning. Our plane was cancelled, and we spent the rest of the morning at the Anchorage Flea Market watching Belly Dancers and buying souvenirs until we finally flew on to Fairbanks where we panned for gold, had a wonderful dinner and saw a full rainbow.
Saturday morning we took the train from Fairbanks to Denali. The ride was beautiful. The Traincar was wonderful. At Denali, we boarded a bus and drove through the National Park. Though the scenery was awesome, the driver went much too fast.
Sunday, Laurie, Gail, Frank and I headed for the Nenana River, donned dry suits and entered a raft to brave the rapids of Nenana River Whitewater. Of course Steve did all the paddling, and we just enjoyed the ride.
After returning to dry land, we boarded the lunch train for Talkeetna. On the way, we could see the Nenana River from above, along with miles and miles of awesome snow capped mountains painted with every color in God's palate.
The train stopped at Talkeetna, where we checked into the beautiful Talkeetna Lodge, perched on a hill two miles above Talkeetna. The view from our room window was the Alaskan Range and Mt. McKinley, the highest mountain in North America
After we settled in, Laurie and I took a hike behind the lodge. This is the view of the Alaskan Range behind the hotel. These mountains we were seeing were so large that they looked awesome from sixty miles away.
Later the four of us took the tram the two miles to town. We walked through town and beyond to the river, where this view of the Alaskan Range greeted us. As the evening progressed we had some four cheese pizza.
Monday morning, we hiked into town and had breakfast with Alan Solomon, a photographer from Chatham, New York, before boarding the train for Anchorage. We had a fine dinner aboard the train, then settled into our Anchorage Hotel Room to dream about our incredible 12 days in Alaska.
